Before you proceed reading, be warned that this is not a usual blog, repeating content about Veganism which is already out there for a million times. A big change of a lifestyle can be really scary and starting out might be overwhelming, I get it. We all have been there before, trying to change and failed, tried again and started all over until we end up back at square one.
No one knows better then me, believe me. I am the master of initiating change going full on from one extreme to another until I get so overwhelmed that I end up in a worse position then before.
Every day we hear new inspiring stories of incredible people who were able to completely transform their lives from one day to another. I can assure you, that’s not me. I believe many of you can relate to this endless circle of ups and downs, stoning ourselves for not being able to do better.
If I have one good quality however, it is my willingness to change and no matter how many times I fail, I always stand up and try again. There is no such thing as failure unless you give up!
You might ask yourself, okay I get it but can that really help me figuring out, how to transition to a Vegan diet? Get to your point!
Fair question. Just hold on a bit longer, we’re almost there!
If my story sounds similar to yours, it might comfort you to know that you are not alone. In fact, we will go through this together. Whilst you transition to a Vegan diet, I will do it too.
We all have our own reasons why we need or want to change but the end goal is the same. In some way or another we all want to be better versions of ourselves. If this is the case for you then you are at the right place. Let’s get started then!
Before you transition to a Vegan diet….
Kick your bad habits first!
If I have learned anything from all my failures then for sure that it is much easier to become a healthier version of yourself when you first kick your bad habits.
I am an on/off Smoker for several years and I realized that whenever I am on my off times that I eat automatically much better and I have a keen interest in health, fitness and self-development.
However, when I am back smoking I eat like crap and nothing is less exciting then exercising. If you have any bad habits, like smoking, excessive drinking, overeating sweets etc. tackle that first.
I can guarantee you that the rest of the transition will be so much easier. If you don’t have any bad habits, consider yourself as a lucky ass and move on to the next part.
Detox yourself before!
This is of course not a must but after a detox you might be craving food so much that even a green leafy vegetable seems to be delicious.
Once you have removed toxins from your body and struggled yourself through the process you might think twice if you really want to eat those cookies or if you rather bless your body with some healthier options to make this detox worthily.
There are plenty of options out there ranging from just a few days to long periods of time. If you don’t feel like juicing yourself, – like me, there are plenty of ready-made juices available which you can purchase for a reasonable price.
Already a 3-day fasting can make a real difference. If you consider a detox, please inform yourself or if you have any health problems, make sure that you talk to your doctor.
Learn as much as you can!
We are in the lucky position that there is endless information available to us. Make use of this and read and watch as much as you can. Once you realize what an effect animal products have on your health, environment and humanity it will be much easier to stick to it. Your reason must be compelling!
Don’t over complicate!
It’s so easy to get confused and frustrated when we want to accomplish too much at one go. Of course there are some exceptional beings who have no problem at all how to transition to a Vegan diet successfully immediately.
If you are one of them, good for you! If you anything like me, baby steps must do.
Whenever I watched videos of more advanced vegans, I felt rather intimidated then encouraged.
Many Herbs or Vegetables that I’ve never heard of before, equipment needed that I don’t have in my kitchen, time-consuming recipes that I would never do because they are just too complicated.
If you start out, do not make the same mistakes. Don’t over complicate. The transition to a vegan diet can be much easier by just focusing on the very basics. Some steps that you can consider are:
- Start reducing your meat intake. Cut off Beef, then move on to Poultry etc. If you are brave enough you can remove all the meat at once. As soon as you got used to it and you are ready for more change, tackle dairy.
- Again remove whatever you miss the least. In my case that would be milk. Replace it with a plant-based version. There are plenty to try out and some of them are really delicious.
- Do not only remove products but increase your intake of plant-based foods. Add Tofu, nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans and legumes.
Those are just some ideas that hopefully get you started. Believe me the possibilities are unlimited. Just take one step at a time. Don’t over stress!
Is it easy to switch?
Certainly, you must know by now how to transition to a Vegan diet as smoothly as possible. But is it easy? That depends on you and how strong your reasons are.
Not everyone adapts to change in the same way. No matter how you are going about it, there is no right or wrong.
Important is that you stick to your own pace and you do what works best for you. Temptations are all around us, so make sure that you are not to hard on yourself if you have a weak moment.
